Why Work in the Bowmanville ED
An experienced, cohesive team. You'll join a congenial group of physicians, seasoned emergency nurses, and allied health staff who know their community and support one another. The stable, experienced nursing team is one of the most consistent things new physicians comment on — it makes for safer shifts and a smoother transition.
MetricAid scheduling that respects your life. The department uses MetricAid, an advanced physician-scheduling service that builds schedules around three axes — performance, equitability, and preference. Physicians report working more of the shifts they prefer, greater fairness, less burnout, and dramatically less scheduling admin. It's scheduling designed to protect work/life balance rather than fight it.
Room to grow, teach, and lead. Teaching opportunities are available through Lakeridge Health's partnership with Queen's University, and the organization offers administrative and physician-leadership pathways for those who want them.
A Hospital — and Region — On the Rise
Bowmanville Hospital is entering one of the largest redevelopments in Lakeridge Health's history. The expansion is set to nearly double the hospital's size, adding new beds, expanded inpatient, ambulatory, and critical care services, private patient rooms, a haemodialysis centre, an expanded Emergency Department, and a rooftop helipad with Level 3 critical care capacity. For an incoming physician, it's a rare chance to build a career at a site actively investing in its future.
Part of Lakeridge Health — five hospitals, four EDs, three critical care units, and 20+ community sites, staffed by nearly 9,000 people.
Home to regional specialty programs including the Central East Regional Cancer Program and the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre.
Academic depth: 140+ active research studies and the Queen's–Lakeridge Health MD Family Medicine Program.
Major expansion underway — successful redevelopment bidder expected to be announced in 2026.
Living in Bowmanville
Bowmanville is a lakeside community of roughly 60,000 in the Municipality of Clarington, about 75 km east of Toronto and just 15 km east of Oshawa. It offers small-town charm with the amenities of a growing community — an appealing mix for physicians and families alike.
Family-friendly. Safe neighbourhoods, well-rated schools, parks, trails, and recreation — space to grow without giving up essentials.
Affordable space. Predominantly newer, single-detached homes with yards, at a lower cost of living than Toronto or the inner GTA.
Easy access to Toronto. Under an hour to the city; the GO Transit Lakeshore East extension will further shorten commutes.
Lakeside lifestyle. A historic downtown, conservation areas, and Lake Ontario shoreline on your doorstep.
In addition, Lakeridge Health also has strong partnerships with all Durham Region Boards of Trades/Chambers of Commerce and municipalities – some of which provide significant cash incentives and financial sign-on bonuses for physicians to choose Durham Region:
The Boards of Trades even act as personal “concierges” for relocating physicians with the Docs for Durham program streamlining the entire transition.
Finally, from a lifestyle and location perspective, Durham Region provides a great balance of lakefront living, greenspace and urban amenities, with direct, easy transit access to downtown Toronto. In addition, there is a lower cost of living compared to the immediate Toronto core.
